“Therefore, say to them, ‘Thus declares the Lord of hosts: Return to me,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts.” – Zechariah 1:3 (ESV)
Have you ever felt like you’ve drifted from God? Maybe life got busy; prayer became inconsistent, or endless to-do lists slowly replaced your time in the Word. If so, you’re not alone. And thankfully, God’s invitation in Zechariah 1:3 reminds us that it’s never too late to return.
A Call to Return
Zechariah was sent to a people who had just returned from exile. While they were physically back in the land, their hearts had not yet returned to God. They were distracted, discouraged, and spiritually distant. God’s message to them was simple yet deeply powerful: Return to Me, and I will return to you.
This is not the voice of a distant, cold deity. This is the voice of a loving Father calling His children home. It’s the same call that echoes through the pages of Scripture—from Genesis to Revelation—God continually draws near to those who would turn their hearts back to Him.

God Doesn’t Move—We Do
If we feel distant from God, it’s not because He walked away. More often than not, it’s because we’ve slowly wandered. But here’s the good news: when we turn, He meets us. Not with shame or scolding—but with mercy, grace, and open arms.
The Hebrew word for “return” in this passage suggests turning back, repenting, and shifting direction. It’s not just a feeling—it’s an action. God is asking His people and us today to take a step toward Him, to realign our hearts, confess what needs to be confessed and come back to a vibrant relationship with Him.
What Returning Looks Like
Coming back to God might mean different things in different seasons:
Picking up your Bible again with intention
Spending quiet time in prayer, even if it’s just five minutes
Asking God to search your heart and reveal areas of resistance
Saying no to distractions that are pulling you away from intimacy with Him
Returning isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present with Him again.
God’s Promise to You
The most beautiful part of Zechariah 1:3 is God’s response: “And I will return to you.” He’s not just waiting passively. He’s ready to restore what’s been broken, to renew what’s grown cold, and to strengthen what’s been weary.
This is a promise you can hold onto. When you return, He responds. When you draw near, He draws near. That’s who He is—faithful, patient, and always pursuing your heart.
Final Encouragement
If it’s been a while since you felt close to God, don’t stay stuck in shame. Zechariah 1:3 is your personal invitation to come back—not to religion, but to relationship. Let today be the day you respond.
He’s waiting for you with grace in His hands and love in His eyes.
